Microorganisms perform best only under ideal conditions. In addition to the temperature, pH-value and sufficient mixing of the container, part of these conditions are the supply of important trace elements and minerals.

If these are deficient, the bacteria turn to their "economy mode" because then they work strictly economically: They only invest energy into processes with a greater return on energy. Initially, bacteria undertake decomposition steps that bring the most yields. Only thereafter, they undertake work that is more extensive.

If a trace element is lacking, then the bacteria will not utilize the entire biogas potential of the input material.
