Latvia: Biogas plant Krumini

The first biogas plant by MT-Energie in the Baltic States

Technical Data

  • Date of commissioning: 2010
  • Capacity: 2 MWel. – two-stage plant with four tanks
  • Input: Grain whole crop silage, groats, grass silage, cattle and pig manure

Since 2009, MT-Energie has been active in Latvia. Near the town of Madona (Madonas Rajons region) one of the country’s first biogas plants was built. The operator of the 2 MWel. plant is a farmer with a large dairy farm.

In the four tanks, each with a height of eight meters, manure and other renewable resources are fermented. In particular these include grain whole crop silage, groats and grass silage. A total of four 500 kWel. CHPs with Perkins engines are powered by the biogas produced.

MT-Energie has given a clear sign for further expansion of renewable energy in the Baltic States with the construction of this biogas plant. The politics in Latvia now explicitly welcomes the decentralized and environmentally friendly energy production of biogas and an accordingly positive framework has been designed.
